Abstract

A selection of articles by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele from the periodical The Spectator (London, 1711-1714) is here presented in Portuguese translation. The introduction stresses the importance of these essays for the development of the form of the periodical essay and describes some of their main features, such as the creation of characters and the use of masks, the aim of shaping taste, character and conduct more than providing news, the refusal of partisan commitments, the presence of critical essays on literature and other arts, and the relationship between this periodical and the literary culture of Classicism.
