Abstract

Iris Murdoch's philosophical and literary works are characterized by her critical, yet benevolent, judgement of Man's existential efforts. Her reading of the utopian instinct confirms this spirit. In ger 1958 novel, The Bell, Murdoch portrays the motivations and experiences behind a lay community trapped between reality and ideal. Thus she goes beyond the traditional dichotomy utopia-dystopia with her tender, and yet raw, reading of the dreams, fears and refuges of Man.
