One hundred years ago, the Modern Art Week of 1922 extrapolated the atmosphere of São Paulo and turned it into a symbol of Brazilian life in the 20th century. The tension between the affordances and the limitations of the Week prefigured the foundation of modernity in Brazil, in society and the arts, and today it manifests itself in a divided nation, torn between greatness and barbarism.
