Often embraced by the early 20th-century avant garde across the globe, Walt Whitman particularly influenced literary projects of national identity in Spanish America and Brazil. Within Mário de Andrade’s poetry, there is a dialogue with Leaves of Grass built around the symbol of the river in ways that contrast with its absorption by other figures in the Americas. Mário’s conversation with Whitman—from Paulicéia Desvairada to the paulistano’s final poem—evolves toward a partial inversion of transcendental paradigms which normally celebrate the individual, community connection, and the local landscape.
