This article undertakes a reflection that seeks to detect and compare occurrences of silence and its possibilities of meaning in the artistic-literary text of Macunaíma (1928) – by Mário de Andrade – and in the homonymous film (1967) – by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade. Amenable to aesthetic investigation, the constructions of silence abound in both works, even because silences are essential elements of any language. The reflections are anchored in studies related to the theme of silence by Eni Orlandi (2007), David Le Breton (1999), Santiago Kovadloff (2003), among others. This study aspires to contribute to the debate about the forms of silence constructed in literature and cinema.
