Abstract

This article analyzes the various manifestos and poetic programs that Yvan Goll signed throughout his literary career and tries to demonstrate how the notion of syncretism can be a common element in his expressionist, zenitist, surrealist and reist proposals. As he belonged to several avant-garde poetry groups in different countries, a drive to fuse the various international movements crosses the Franco-German work of this Alsatian author on both a theoretical and poetic level and shapes a style that is difficult to characterize according to the traditional labels of avant-garde studies. Notwithstanding his precursor cosmopolitanism of a world culture and the desire to abolish borders in the broadest sense, Yvan Goll’s texts reveal a remarkable eurocentrism in his view of the literary field. We will also observe how the notion of international syncretism gives way to the desire for fusion with the poetic object in the poetry of Goll’s maturity after World War II.
